Mahembe is a privately owned washing station in the Nymasheke region of Western Rwanda The owner Justin Musabyiama built the washing station in 2010.
Justin owns his own eight hectare farm and has developed a strong relationship withthe other farmers in the area by offering competitive prices for harvests.
The picking season runs from March to August and can shift dramaticlly with the changable weather, especially at 1900 metres above sea level. Round Hill Roastery has roasted this coffee for a few years now, and this year it is full of winetr spice.
Farms are generally run by small families, who loving care for the plants and pick the cherries themselves.
The washing station buys cherry and has strict routines for sorting and grading. Any Cherry that arrives that hasn't been sufficiently sorted is re-sorted before processing. It is de-pulped, then dry fermented for 10-12 hours. It is then carfully graded and soakedfor 16 hours. Drying is for 21 days on African drying beds, and is covered by netting during the middle of the day and night.
